We increase access to contraception

Upstream partners with states to provide health centers with patient-centered, evidence-based training and technical assistance that eliminate barriers to offering the full range of contraception. We work directly with physicians, obstetrician-gynecologists, nurses, nurse practitioners, midwives, medical assistants and administrative staff to ensure a tailored, cohesive experience for the whole team.

About us

Upstream was founded in 2014 to expand opportunity and reduce unplanned pregnancy across the United States. Our headquarters are located in Boston, MA.

Our first statewide intervention began in Delaware. We are now working across the healthcare infrastructures in Washington, Massachusetts, North Carolina and Rhode Island. We’re working to achieve impact at scale across the United States. By 2024, our goal is to work with healthcare practices across the U.S. that serve over 1 million women each year.

Why It Matters

Impact at scale

Upstream is transforming health care so that the full range of contraceptive options are available to all patients wherever they access care. Our systems-change approach:

  • Provides training and technical assistance to healthcare providers of all types and sizes, including hospital systems, federally qualified health centers, private practices and more
  • Reaches more patients by integrating contraceptive care as a standard part of primary care for all women of reproductive age
  • Reduces state-level policy barriers such as insurance reimbursement issues
  • Sustains changes in contraceptive access with support from state and community leadership

How we work

We’re changing healthcare for good

Upstream’s team makes our big vision possible. We hire star performers who share our passion for making contraceptive access an integrated part of healthcare.
