Now more than ever:
we need patient-centered
reproductive care.

Let's
upstream
it.

Making contraceptive care
primary care

Contraceptive care is important to a person’s long-term health and wellbeing. Yet many patients lack access to their preferred birth control. The results: 1 in 4 women don’t get the birth control they want and in the U.S., 45% of all pregnancies are unintended.

At Upstream, we believe that addressing unintended pregnancy starts where most patients receive their care: in a primary care setting. Since 2014, we have partnered with over 100 healthcare organizations just like yours to provide training and wraparound services to make patient-centered, non-coercive contraceptive care a standard part of your primary care clinic. We’re here to help PCPs offer a full range of patient-centered contraceptive care — and give patients the access and options they deserve.

Free accredited training to fit your clinic

Upstream partners with healthcare organizations just like yours, including Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), hospital systems, state and local health departments. We train our partners on patient-centered, evidence-based contraceptive counseling, and the skills to place and remove all methods of contraception. Our training and wraparound services are tailored to each clinic, CME/CEU-eligible, and free.

Powerful benefits for your practice

Upstream is helping our partners transform the delivery of contraceptive care so that every patient has access to the full range of contraceptive methods, no matter where they receive care. Here are just a few benefits of partnering with us.

Every patient should feel empowered and enjoy equitable and regular access to the contraceptive method of their choice. Among those patients receiving patient-centered and non-coercive care from Upstream-trained partners, 94% of them report making their own birth control decision or with some input from clinical staff (i.e., shared decision making), and 92% of patients report receiving enough information to make an informed decision about their contraceptive goals.

You want to provide your patients the best care — and you’re not alone. Following Upstream’s training, clinical and support staff at our partner organizations report feeling more confident in delivering patient-centered contraceptive care. Of those trained, 93% of clinicians and 95% of support staff either agreed or strongly agreed that their knowledge or skills had increased due to Upstream’s training.

Organizations who partner with us receive $25,000 – $50,000 in direct funding to help offset the cost of their staff’s time spent participating in our training and practice change work.

Our dedicated team works with you to tailor our training and practice change support to fit your busy schedules and technology capabilities. We ensure that our work together is minimally disruptive to your daily appointments, and time is spent on areas where support is most valuable.

Our training is CME-accredited which means that your clinical and support staff can receive credits towards their professional development goals, while learning alongside healthcare professionals from across the country.

Empowering your patients

Contraceptive care starts with a conversation. We want patients at Upstream-trained health centers to have a voice in their own reproductive health, and feel empowered to make decisions. According to our surveys:

  • 94% of patients report making a birth control choice of their own or with some input from clinical staff (i.e., shared decision making)
  • 92% of patients report receiving enough information to make the best decision about birth control
  • 95% of patients are able to access to their preferred method
