We provide patient-centered CME/CEU-eligible training to staff and clinicans on evidence-based contraceptive counseling and offer workflow assistance that increases single-visit access to all contraception methods.

Our partners’ patients receive patient-centered care, free from coercion. Thanks to that, 94% of patients report making a birth control choice of their own or with some input from clinical staff (i.e., shared decision making), and 92% of patients who report receiving enough info to make the best decision about birth control.
Clinical and support staff at partner organizations also report feeling more confident in providing patient-centered contraceptive care following Upstream’s training. As well, 93% of Clinicians and 95% of Support Staff agreed or strongly agreed that their knowledge or skills have increased due to the Upstream training.
Organizations who partner with us receive $25,000 – $50,000 in grants to help offset the cost of their staff’s time spent progressing through our training and practice transformation work.

We provide comprehensive training and practice transformation interventions to health centers across the U.S. to ensure all patients have access to the birth control method of their choice. We have partnered with organizations in Delaware, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Texas, and Washington to name a few, and the list continues to grow.
In Delaware, we launched Delaware Contraceptive Access Now (DE CAN) is a public-private partnership between the state of Delaware, Upstream, health centers and community organizations across Delaware. We provide training and practice transformation interventions to our health center partners, ensuring all patients have access to the full range of birth control methods in a single visit. More than 180 health centers and social service agencies across Delaware received Upstream’s training and interventions.
Three years into the partnership, Delaware saw a 24% decrease in unplanned pregnancies among Title X patients ages 20-39, and 98% of our partners’ patients reported that they did not feel pressured to choose a certain contraceptive method.
Upstream is leading a statewide initiative across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to expand access to the full range of contraceptive methods. Through generous support from Massachusetts’ Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EOHHS), Upstream is partnering with health centers across the state to deliver training and technical assistance aimed at removing barriers to contraceptive care. In a state where 45% of pregnancies are unplanned, Upstream is bringing our training and interventions to over 35 health centers in an effort to bring patient-centered, non-coercive contraceptive care to over 250,000 patients of reproductive age.
Upstream North Carolina is a multi-year initiative launched by Upstream USA to ensure all patients in North Carolina, where 43% of pregnancies are unintended, have access to the full range of birth control methods in a single visit by providing training and supportive interventions to health centers. We recognize the horrific history of eugenics in North Carolina and understand the importance of ensuring a system of care that supports patient autonomy. Our work focuses on training providers in over 40 participating agencies to offer patient-centered, non-coercive contraceptive care and health equity across our programming.
Upstream Washington is a multi-year partnership with the State of Washington, a state where 35% of pregnancies are unintended, to ensure all patients have access to the full range of birth control methods in a single visit by providing training and supportive interventions to health centers. We work with health care providers of all types, including hospitals, family planning agencies, local health departments, Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), Tribal and IHS providers, rural health centers and more to reduce barriers preventing patients from accessing the same-day birth control method of their choice.
